What in the World are We Eating? (The truth about MSG and GMOs)

Across the nation concerns over non-organic vegetables and poisonous additives have encouraged people, like myself, to do more research on what it is exactly that we are consuming. I want to know not only what is in that bag of Doritos that I may causally eat, but also how it may affect my health and that of my family.

MSGs do What?

Many people would be surprised to hear the results of numerous studies on MSG or monosodium glutamate, a common food flavoring. MSG is in everything from the aforementioned Doritos to Hamburger Helper. But according to a 2003 study conducted by the Department for Public Health in Poland, MSG was found to depress serum of growth hormones which affects how drugs are metabolized in the body thereby increasing sensitivity to some environmental agents. This can prove deadly to individuals with autoimmune diseases. In addition, the Industrial Toxicology Research Centre in India found that MSG causes rats to develop learning disorders. However, MSG is not recognized in the mainstream as dangerous to human health.

GMOs or Franken-Food?

GMOs or Genetically Modified Organisms, have caught the attention of the American public in recent years. The company behind GMO food is Monsanto. The company specializes in altering the DNA of plants. This science experiment has had virtually no human studies conducted proving them as safe. However, this year a study was released by a team of French scientists indicating the negative aspects of GMOs. Results of their study showed an increase in mammary tumors of female rats and life-threatening kidney and liver problems in the males.  The question to the American public should therefore be, why are we eating these foods?

At the very least shouldn't we be asking why cancer rates are so high (with approximately 1 in 2 men and women being diagnosed with cancer)? Shouldn't we at least study any possible side-effects genetically modified food can have on human beings? How stupid are we that we refuse to study Frankenstein food before we consume it. The fact is that GMOs have been available and readily consumed by Americans for over 10 years. However, no one has studied the possible link between cancer and what we are eating.
